Vincent Van Gogh painted 'Still Life: Vase with Twelve Sunflowers' as a part of a series in the summer of 1888 in Arles, in anticipation of a visit by Paul Gauguin, his friend and fellow post impressionist artist. He had planned for a dozen sunflower paintings to brighten up the Yellow House which he and Gauguin would use as a studio. Van Gogh wrote to his friend Emile Bernard:
"I’d like to do a decoration for the studio. Nothing but large Sunflowers. Next door to your shop, in the restaurant, as you know, there’s such a beautiful decoration of flowers there; I still remember the big sunflower in the window. Well, if I carry out this plan there’ll be a dozen or so panels. The whole thing will therefore be a symphony in blue and yellow. I work on it all these mornings, from sunrise. Because the flowers wilt quickly and it’s a matter of doing the whole thing in one go."
Unfortunately, Vincent was only able to complete four sunflower works in August, 1888. The one shown here is the third of the series. The original is currently in the collection of the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, Germany.
The bright colors, as Vincent described as Chrome Yellow and Veronese Blue, joyfully shine outward and instantly liven up any room.
